Where Should We Begin?
Pidgin 34 (October 2026)“Where Should We Begin?” argues that artificial intelligence unsettles architecture’s longheld dependence on writing, revealing how discourse is being automated, commodified, and politically constrained at the very moment the discipline needs critical language most.

Grounds Grids Grammar

Solo exhibition, Armstrong Gallery, Kent State CAED

2026

Territory is not merely land, but a social
construct shaped by histories of power and control. As a specific form of socially produced space it emerged from colonial advancements
in cartography, political sovereignty and land ownership. This exhibition reveals how the
modern sense of the term developed from those contexts. Territory is thus not merely
an object, but the outcome of social relations imposed on land deemed accessible.
Through a critique of that contingent and often chaotic evolutionary history, it redirects
inherited formations toward a new language of territory — one that resists extractive impulses
and understands land through an ethics of care.

Reverse UrbanizationAn Adaptive Grid for Territorial Repair
2026

– present

Reverse Urbanization starts from a simple inversion. Historically, the survey grid has divided land in order to intensify it: the finer the parcel, the more development it was expected to carry. Reverse Urbanization keeps the grid but subdivides most finely where ground is most damaged, so that density marks the need for repair rather than the promise of growth. This method reads terrain against Superfund listings, toxic release inventories, and intact habitat cores. From that reading, an adaptive grid refines itself over contaminated and degraded ground and thins to nothing where land needs no intervention. Each refined cell becomes a unit of stewardship: a zone of remediation and ecological succession. Tested across the Cuyahoga watershed and the township of Tallmadge, Ohio, the project re-reads the inherited geometry of the continental survey. It treats that geometry as an instrument that can be reorganized. Boundaries become thresholds of care, and urbanization proceeds in reverse, beginning with ecological expansion rather than urban growth.

PyraA project of Fields (Laure Nolte and Paul Mosley). Built with Kevin
Lair, Associate Professor, Iowa State University, and Seth Andrews.

Under construction,

2026

Pyra is a full-scale timber pavilion designed by Fields for the Westbrook Artists’ Site in Winterset, Iowa. It sits on a minimal post foundation and will be assembled by hand from thin, locally milled boards. Construction began in summer 2026 with Kevin Lair (Associate Professor, Iowa State University; Director, Westbrook Artists’ Site) and Seth Andrews. Once monoculture farmland, the site has been returning to prairie through controlled burns that Lair has conducted for nearly a decade. Pyra serves as shelter for wildlife in this recovering landscape and as a platform for monitoring the burns. Over time it will show how a building and its ground act on each other as the wood weathers, the vegetation around it shifts, and the site gradually takes the structure back into its own processes of succession.

Made of Maize

Co-written with Laure Nolte
79th Annual International Conference, Society of Architectural Historians
Mexico City, Mexico, 17 April 2026“Made of Maize” argues that the corn plant is a spatial medium that has actively produced territory — tracing how Indigenous polyculture, cadastral survey, the steel plow, genetic hybridization, and rail infrastructure assembled the North American Corn Belt over two and a half centuries as an engineered landscape whose geometry and typologies are inseparable from the biological history of the plant.

Projective Territories SymposiumCollege of Architecture and Environmental Design, Kent State University
April 3-4, 2025

Projective Territories takes up the often ambiguous place of territory in architecture. At its simplest, territory is land altered by human inhabitation: the ground where institutions impose rights of access and property, and where communities form habits in relation to institutions of power. Because territory is shaped by forces of value and exchange, largely driven by capital, its alteration has produced deep social and ecological disparities. Infrastructural failures, agricultural runoff, and resource extraction concentrate harm in “sacrifice zones” that bear lasting scars. Yet these same derelict sites and spontaneous ecosystems also reveal how land adapts, repairs itself, and sustains life in anthropogenic conditions. Understanding these processes calls for a return to territory as an architectural question, one that figures such as Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, Vittorio Gregotti, and Ludwig Hilberseimer pursued when they raised architectural form to the status of geographic form. If a survivable future requires rethinking social organization, economy, and subsistence, how might architecture, as a way of thinking and rethinking the world, help shape these new realities?

Contributors Lydia Kallipoliti, Elisa Iturbe, Neeraj Bhatia, Albert Pope.

Not Just in the Wilderness

Thresholds 52: Disappearance (2024)

“Not Just in the Wilderness” argues that Ohio’s territorial history reveals how abstraction, land control, and industrialization have erased natural habitats, yet simultaneously opened possibilities for new socio-ecological forms of stewardship in which architecture becomes a medium of ecological care. How can architecture nourish a natural environment that is already so abstracted by human society when even our ideas of nature are cultural mythologies?︎ Link
